In 2024, Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming was experiencing increased visitor attendance, which was causing congestion, frustration, and incidents in its parking area.
Limited to 300 parking spaces, traffic flow into the park exceeded departures, creating a chaotic situation leading into and within the parking area. Since limited staff had to manually manage the traffic flow, park rangers were forced to look for an automated solution.
The team at Devils Tower National Monument contacted Donny Jeffers, Government Relations Manager at Ver-Mac, to find a solution to their problem. Donny, along with Ver-Mac’s GSA partner – Federal Contracts Corporation, recommended a set of Ver-Mac Portable Traffic Signals. Devils Tower National Monument received the Traffic Signals in summer 2024 and have utilized them almost every day since.
After paying the entrance fee into the park, visitors drive up a two-lane road approximately 2 miles to the parking area and visitor center. The park rangers set up the traffic signals about a ½ mile from the parking area to regulate the traffic flow into the park.
Generally, they will stop traffic for 190 seconds with a red light activated and release traffic for 20 seconds with a green light. Two additional settings have been pre-programed to quickly increase or decrease traffic flow.
The Park has had a significant reduction in traffic congestion, which has led to a corresponding decrease in frustration and incidents within the parking area. This result has been lauded by park personnel and visitors alike!
