3G Sunset: How It Affected Our Industry?

What is the 3G Sunset?

In 2022, cellular providers in the United States phased out 3G networks to free up the airwaves for 4G and 5G networks. This means that all connected tools or equipment that were equipped with components that connected to the 3G network may have lost connectivity. This includes phones, home alarms, connected vehicles and more. Your equipment could have been affected if it was not set up to connect to 4G or 5G networks.

How Did This Affect Our Equipment?

Ver-Mac units are equipped with modems and firmware that enable them to connect to cellular networks. This allows units to be managed remotely through JamLogic Fleet Management, to enable Smart Work Zone notifications and to have Connected Work Zones that collect and share data. Losing connectivity would have put all these functionalities in jeopardy.

Keeping Ver-Mac Units Connected

Some older equipment might have had modems and firmware that were only compatible with 3G and would have needed updating. With the phase-out, Ver-Mac proactively reached out to customers with affected units to provide an updated modem connected to 4G and/or to provide instructions on how to update the firmware to connect with 4G. If your unit was affected, we reached out to ensure your unit stayed up and running.
