Condition-responsive systems

Condition-responsive systems identify and provide motorist guidance about real-time, atypical roadway conditions, especially hazardous or unique roadway and weather conditions. Condition-responsive systems include these automated applications:

  • Changeable Speed Limits easily provide the ability to automatically change the work zone speed limit without manually covering permanent signs. This system allows the flexibility to vary the work zone speed limit using pre-programmed parameters based on the time of day, day of week, or other changing conditions.
  • Hazardous Roadway Warnings dynamically caution motorists about dangerous and/or unexpected roadway conditions. This application can detect weather-related changes and incidents requiring changes in driver behavior (e.g., a blocked lane).
  • Trucks Entry/Exit/Crossing Warnings are useful in temporary traffic control applications in which trucks must use the mainline roadway. When trucks are unable to accelerate, decelerate, or cross the roadway without necessitating changes in driver behavior, such as lane or speed changes, this system automatically provides alerts to drivers.

Statewide PCMS System Integration

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s (WisDOT) Management, Maintenance, and Operations (MMO) owns 150+ portable changeable message signs (PCMS’s) located throughout the state. Without a systematic way to track sign location (by GPS), usage, and maintenance records, the department faced many challenges to making the best use of the fleet. Poor analog cell communication also contributed to the fleet’s underuse.

Traffic Technologies is providing comprehensive PCMS system integration through the JamLogic Application Server and JamLogic Controller. Our web interface allows for uniform control and communication, record keeping, and sign tracking. By networking signs to an existing, state-owned system, we are helping the DOT upgrade communications quality. Communications access is improved through integration of the PCMS fleet with the State Highway Patrol network. In addition to the

Automated Wind Advisory System

The Wreckhouse area, in the SW part of Newfoundland, spans 40-50 km on the Trans-Canada Highway. Wreckhouse has a unique wind funneling phenomenon due to the topography of the local area. Wind gusts can exceed 180km/h, affecting driving conditions and overturning vehicles. The Ministry was seeking an ITS based solution, using existing an existing Environment Canada Automated Weather Station (AWS) to improve public safety and awareness for this rural area. Two Ver-Mac Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) were installed to display automated warning messages for inbound and outbound traffic entering the wind zone. Three different message sets are chosen based on customized algorithms that processed observations from the weather station. In addition, the signs are used for other traffic needs when high winds do not exist.
